Overview
Solar inverters and battery energy-storage converters run continuously and often in demanding conditions, so their capacitors must hold their capacitance and their ripple rating for many years. Because the capacitor is usually the first component to age in a power converter, choosing a long-life part and keeping it cool is one of the most effective ways to extend the life of the whole product. TDK EPCOS film and aluminum electrolytic capacitors serve this role, and BeiLuo supplies them with genuine traceability and FAE support.
The Inverter DC Bus
A solar inverter boosts the panel voltage onto a DC bus and then switches it into the grid, so the bus capacitor both stores energy and smooths the ripple of the switching stage. The bus voltage is often in the 400 V to 800 V class, so a capacitor with margin for switching overshoot is needed, and the ripple current at the switching frequency sets the heating. A low-inductance DC-link film capacitor such as the B25620 suits the high-frequency bus, while a long-life aluminum electrolytic suits the bulk energy in a storage converter.
Ripple and Life
The ripple current heats the capacitor, and the core temperature sets the aging rate, roughly doubling the life for every 10 °C reduction. In a solar inverter that runs hot at midday, keeping the capacitors cool and the ripple within the derated rating is what makes the bank last. A film capacitor does not dry out, which is an advantage in a long-life outdoor design, and a long-life electrolytic such as the 12,000-hour B43713 series extends the service interval where bulk energy is needed.
Energy Storage and Bidirectional Conversion
A battery storage converter charges and discharges, so its DC link carries current in both directions and the capacitor sees the ripple of both operating modes. Here a screw-terminal bank is often used for the energy storage, sized for the hold-up and the ripple, and the busbar design keeps the current sharing even. A film capacitor can be added in parallel for the high-frequency path, combining long life with low inductance.
IGBT Protection
At the switching edge, the commutation-loop inductance produces a voltage spike across the IGBT. A low-inductance snubber capacitor such as the B32656S, mounted close to the module, absorbs that energy and limits the overshoot, which protects the device and improves the EMC of the inverter. The terminal configuration is matched to the module, and the layout keeps the snubber loop short.
Selection and Supply
Selection starts with the bus voltage, the capacitance and the ripple, then narrows by case size, type and life, favoring a long-life film or electrolytic part for outdoor equipment. BeiLuo keeps mainstream TDK EPCOS capacitors in regional stock, ships them with import declaration, certificate of origin and RoHS documents, and supports ripple, lifetime and layout design with an in-house FAE team. From a rooftop string inverter to a grid-scale storage converter, our engineers help you choose the capacitors that keep the converter running for years.
